Giving a national courier a helping hand.

When a national courier service got into trouble trying to make a delivery in a 3.5 Tonne truck it was Glyn Upton Removals to the rescue. The wagon just couldn’t make the journey to the top of the Wrekin to deliver its consignment, so instead turned to Glyn Upton Removals who’s head depot is based within the Wrekins shadow for assistance. After a chat with the couriers head office and finding out the crate (approx 6’6” X 6’6” X 2’) was full of spare parts for vital repairs to the antenna system Mr Upton decided to laugh at superstition and even though it was Friday the 13th, he’d get the crate to the top.

When the courier was pondering if Glyns crew could make it to the top, Scot Sampson, one of Glyns top removals men who were assisting on the day said “he doesn’t know Glyn, once he said he’d do it, that crate was as good as there, we’d of carried it if we’d had to.”

Upon returning from driving the 7.5 Tonne vehicle to the top of the mountain and back, which would have been too much of a challenge for many a driver Glyn calmly said, “I like a challenge” and climbed back under the vehicle he was repairing before the incident.

Ombudsman visits Glyn Upton Removals

The newly appointed ombudsman for the UK removals industry has visited Shropshire’s Glyn Upton Removals as part of a country wide fact finding tour.

Matti Alderson is visiting large and small professionals in the business to learn as much as she can in her new role as the independent decision maker dealing with consumer and commercial complaints.

“I was recommended to visit Glyn Upton’s because they are a long standing business knowledgeable about removals of all kinds and well known in this part of the country,” said Matti, who is also visiting a wide range of removals firms around the UK.

“I am here to learn from people who know the industry in depth,” said the former Director General of the Advertising Standards Authority who is also a Press Complaints Commissioner.

During her three hour visit to Glyn Upton’s Cluddley depot next to the M54 Wellington junction, she was accompanied by Martin Rose, of the National Guild of Removers and Storers, a founder member of the Ombudsman scheme for the removals industry.

“We want to encourage the public to deal with firms that will ensure they get the highest standards of service. Those companies which are members of the Ombudsman Scheme are the ones which consumers should be looking for,” said Mr Rose.

He warned people who were due to move home or office to beware of “cowboy” removals firms which offered a good price but often were not properly insured, drove dubious trucks, had untrained staff and were not a member of any trade organisation.

“It is all of your worldly goods they are moving so you want the best of care. You shouldn’t even think of using any removals company that is not a member of the National Guild of Removers and Storers or even the British Association of Removers. A company like Glyn Upton is a member of both. We are proud to have them as members because this is a very well run business.”

Industry horror stories include one cowboy firm which vanished taking with it the furniture and effects from 18 separate households. Many “one man and a van” concerns are also not insured for damage or breakages, he warned.

Glyn Upton, whose daughter Sarah is the fourth generation in Shropshire’s best known family removals firm, said he was honoured to have been seen as a model for how a good business in this sector should be run. His is the only Shropshire firm to be a member of the Ombudsman Scheme, which has around 300 members across the UK.

“It is a good idea to be a member as it safeguards the public,” said Glyn, whose grandfather started the original Upton’s business in the county.

Library's 30,000 books in storage

A total of 700 crates neatly packed with around 30,000 books weighing in at 17 tons were taken into secure container storage at Glyn Upton’s purpose built storage depot at Cluddley, Wellington.

“It has been a major exercise but everything has gone well and we shall be returning the books on December 20 and 21 once the refurbishment has been completed,” said Glyn.

“We have moved a number of libraries in Shropshire before so we were ready and organised.”

All the crates have been colour coded to make it easy for staff to return books to the right shelves when the library re-opens on January 7 after a four week closure with a new book stock, new carpet, better signs and revised opening times.

Senior library assistant Anne Collins said: “I couldn’t believe the speed at which the books were moved.”

Operations Manager Shaun Croft said: “We would like to thank the library staff for helping to make this a very smooth removals operation.”

Full library services are available at eight other libraries and via the mobile service while the St Quentin Gate library is closed. Customers can still return loaned items to Telford with special drop off bins in the foyer from 11am to 2pm, Monday to Friday, said a council spokesman.

An amnesty up to and including January 19 has been agreed for items due to be returned during the closure. Later opening times will be introduced for the New Year opening.

Dawley Surgery On The Move.

Smooth Medical Move.

A special “removals relay race” took to the road to move a Telford doctors’ surgery in time for its opening today (Monday, January 7th).

Glyn Upton Removals of Telford, was called in to despatch five of its largest removals trucks from its fleet to move Dawley doctors’ surgery from its old premises in Doseley Road to its brand new £1 million purpose built surgery in nearby King Street.

Minimum disruption was essential to ensure that the surgery was up and running this morning (mon) while maintaining a Saturday surgery cover for patients in need.

“We’ve never done it before but we thought it would be speedier if we sent in five removals vans to perform a relay service between the two surgeries,” said Ian Ball, of Glyn Upton Removals, of Cluddley, Telford.

“We staggered the vans so that when one was fully loaded, the next one was ready for loading and at the same time equipment was being unloaded at the other end. It was a planned precision move which went according to clockwork and saved time to ensure they were up and running Monday morning.”

The move began at 8.30am on Saturday when a total of 300 crates containing files for 10,750 patients were transported along with four doctors’ couches, desks, lockers, nine carousels packed with patients files, drugs and filing cabinets.

Surgery office manager Sandra Taylor said a doctor and receptionist were on duty at the old surgery for emergencies while the move went ahead on Saturday.

Doctor Paul Spencer said they called in Glyn Upton Removals because it was so important to get computers up and running and medical records in place ready for the new surgery opening.

No mountain too high for Glyn Upton Removals

When essential digital broadcasting equipment is needed at the top of The Wrekin, Glyn Upton Removals is there to help.

A mountain top was an unusual destination for a Shropshire removals company which was sent to deliver sensitive radio equipment.

But Glyn Upton Removals, of Telford, accomplished the difficult task despite a treacherous and slippy route normally used by walkers.

Glyn Upton's were asked by Crown Castle, a telecommunications company, to deliver new radio digital broadcasting equipment to the top of The Wrekin - and at 1,365ft above sea level that was one tall order.

A winding and rocky pathway leading to the top of Shropshire's legendary mountain was made more treacherous by months of floodwater, said company boss Glyn Upton, who has been in the family removals business all his working life.

But the potential problem of getting a 26ft long and 13ft high removals van weighing more than seven tonnes proved no problem at all for the removals firm based at nearby Cluddley, Telford.

"It was quite a feat to get an extremely large removals vehicle on top of The Wrekin and this is certainly one of our more unusual requests. But if you can take sensitive radio equipment to the top of a mountain then it just proves that we can go anywhere."

The digital audio broadcasting equipment and the two transmitters were delivered to the mast at the top of the peak yesterday afternoon (Tues). The equipment, being installed by Transcom Engineering Services, of Apley Castle, Telford, will bring digital radio to Shropshire for the first time.

"It just goes to show that we can and will go anywhere to make a delivery," said Glyn, who is more used to organising removals for companies and home owners across the region - at a much lower altitude.
